We’re often told of the hardships that our ancestors had to suffer throughout the two World Wars in order to overcome adversity. Although undoubtedly the soldiers suffered the most during the fierce fighting, it is easy to forget the suffering and sacrifice of those left behind.

With so much money and resources being dedicated to the war effort, people at home were forced to be ruthlessly efficient with their spending habits in all capacities, including gas and electricity. What was bred as a result of rationing and the struggle throughout the wartime era was a frugality and community spirit which encouraged economic savings and treating all commodities with a special reverence.

Six decades later and that careful thrift has been lost to wanton abandon. At a time when gas and oil resources are becoming scarcer, our desire and hunger for energy is getting bigger and bigger. Perhaps one of the answers to our energy problems is not to just find more gas and oil, or develop new technologies, but to adopt an old-fashioned outlook on energy consumption.

In April 2009 the Energy Saving Trust designed the “Don’t be Fuelish” campaign which aimed to encourage people to be more community minded in order to waste less energy. As the recession trudges on, consumers continue to face the consequences of years of easy credit and overspending: Defaults on credit card debt, foreclosures, short sales, and bankruptcies have all been on the rise for months and continue to head toward record-breaking highs.

Those consumers hoping to avoid the full defaults of foreclosure and bankruptcy are increasingly hoping to find at least partial debt relief in limited debt forgiveness, lobbying creditors for principal write-downs on mortgage debt through home loan modifications, for partial write-offs of credit card and medical debt through debt settlement negotiations, and for lower interest rates and fee waivers through credit counseling and debt consolidation programs.

At the same time that record numbers of Americans are falling behind on their home, car, and credit card payments and seeking out credit debt relief options, the nation’s consumers, in response to the crippling economy, have cut back on their spending, started saving more, or both.

“Household spending has shown signs of stabilizing, but remains constrained by ongoing job losses, lower housing wealth, and tight credit,” the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee said in a statement after its April meeting.

Will Short-Term Trends Become Lifelong Habits?

A recent Gallup poll attempts to forecast whether these newly developed savings and spending habits are here to stay and whether American consumers will persist in these debt management patterns after the recession has ended.

The Gallup poll, conducted April 20–21, found that the recession may have a long-term impact on the financial habits of the average American: A little over half of those polled said that their new financial habits will continue for years ahead.

Of those polled, 36 percent said they’re currently saving more than they used to, and 27 percent believe that they will continue to save more money in the future.

As far as spending, 53 percent of those polled said they’re spending less now than what they used to, a figure that helps explain why retail sales have dropped by nearly 10 percent over the last year. This spending less will become their new way of life, said 32 percent. And almost six out of 10 now consider themselves the type of person who enjoys saving more than spending.

Overall, 51 percent of American consumers think that they’ll settle into a “new, normal” pattern with their reformed savings or spending habits, an indication that — at least as long as consumers continue to be spooked by the specter of a breakable economy — a new American frugality may be here to stay.

Short-Lived Resolutions, the Long Memory of Consumer Debt

Although the number of Americans who intend to permanently cut back on their spending is impressive, that fiscal resolve may all change once the economy rebounds and the financial markets improve, the Gallup authors warn. Once the economy begins to recuperate, it remains to be seen whether consumers will return to their previous freewheeling spending habits — as the nation’s retailers hope — or whether “the ‘new frugality’ … may indeed have a chance of settling in as a new cultural norm.”

In the meantime, however, even as “new frugal” Americans savor the experience of saving more and spending less, these recently cultivated tendencies can’t undo the years of overspending and accumulated debt that overtook most of the country. While newly thrifty consumers may be paving the way for debt-free living during the next decade and beyond, in the current economic environment, there’s little to suggest that indebted, cash-strapped, and unemployed Americans won’t continue to fall victim to defaults, bankruptcy, and foreclosure as they struggle to find jobs and some measure of debt relief.

For years the British population has been submerging itself in a sea of credit and debt, taking out loans and credit cards have become the norm for today’s modern spend happy Brit. However according to recent figures the British population are no longer amounting credit at a rate of noughts but are actually choosing to be extra frugal with their cash. In the wake of a global recession the savings ratio has moved up to 4 or 5%, compare that to 12 months ago where we were saving less than any time over the previous 50 years.

The biggest rise in savers has been between the age group 25 to 34 years old; these are people who have traditionally grown up with the easy going lifestyle where loans and credit cards are used to purchase goods in lieu of actual savings. This is a group who often seen to be footloose and free who don’t look further than the weekend, a type of living many have grown accustom to. However the recession has hit them a cold glass of water and made them become extra thrifty and frugal with their savings now choosing to put them in a savings account, with reservations about the future and the economy they are now putting money aside for the proverbial ‘rainy day.

What many financial experts are saying is to be careful with what you do with your money and the investments you make. Avoiding building up any debt that isn’t really necessary, instead be frugal and plan for the future and save for those things you don’t need right away. Some are suggesting spreading any savings over various investments as this will protect your money as it won’t be tied up in one place if the worst was to happen. Investing in commodities and property gives your investment a much stronger support; it isn’t only balancing on 1 leg but being supported by 3 or 4.

However they do recommend you do your research as a lucky ‘punt’ might work on one occasion but it is no way to ensure financial safety for the future. Avoid the pitfalls of bad investments by putting your savings into an account that is guaranteed for a certain amount or a high rate ISA. If something is too good to be true, it usually is.
